It Started With The sound
Long before anyone in the West called it "mahjong," players called it the sparrow game — because a table of shuffling tiles sounds like a flock arguing over a branch. That sound is still the whole point. Four people, a rack of tiles, and nowhere else to be for the next two hours.
We started Chatelisse because most of what's sold as mahjong today asks you to choose: a set that photographs well, or one you can actually read from across the table. A price that feels serious, or one that doesn't wipe out the birthday budget. We didn't think that was much of a choice.

How We Build Chatelisse
Tiles, Done Right
Every tile is cast in acrylic or melamine, chosen for chip resistance over a high-gloss shine, and drop-tested from table height before approval. Racks, mats, and roll bags are available separately, so you build your table exactly the way you play.
Patterns With a Point
We draw every tile face ourselves, start to finish, and we don't reuse anyone else's linework. Our collection spans six colorways and counting — from Fruit Pink to Jade White — because a mahjong table should look like it belongs in your dining room, not someone else's catalog.
Legible By Design
Most of the players we talked to learned this game from someone whose eyes were better than theirs are now. Every Chatelisse tile ships in a large-print face as standard, not an upcharge — tested at arm's length under a dim dining room light, not a photo studio.
